Regular Season
General Info:
Although both teams practice and compete together, there are actually two teams — the boys team and the girls team — each of which includes swimming and diving. Swim and dive points are added together for each team to determine meet scores.
Meets:
There are approximately 6-8 regular season meets, usually one per week. These meets are typically dual meets in which two high school teams compete against each other.
All high school meets have eleven (11) swimming events—eight (8) individual events and three (3) relay events. Swimmers may enter a maximum of four events; no more than two of them may be individual events. A team can enter 4 swimmers in each scoring event (3 if it is a 6 lane pool). The host team has the option to add Exhibition heats, which do not score points but do allow swimmers to compete for time.
Swimmers are selected by the coach for each event or relay based on their times and the coach’s goals for that meet.
Order of Events:
The order of events for a meet is as follows:
- 200 yard Medley Relay
- 200 yard Freestyle
- 200 yard Individual Medley
- 50 yard Freestyle
- 1 Meter Diving/or 10 minute break
- 100 yard Butterfly
- 100 yard Freestyle
- 500 yard Freestyle
- 200 yard Freestyle Relay
- 100 yard Backstroke
- 100 yard Breaststroke
- 400 yard Freestyle Relay
Girls and Boys alternate in swimming each of the events. The girls’ events always precede the boys’ events. The dive meet is held and scored as an event of the swim meet—usually at a separate location; sometimes on a different day. Points from the dive team are added to swim team points to arrive at a total meet score. Meets are won or lost based on total points. There are no ribbons or other awards for regular season meets.
Scoring of Meets:
For high school dual meets, we are allowed 3 or 4 entries per event depending on whether the pool has 6 or 8 lanes respectively, and one scoring heat per event. Often, there will be one or two additional heats in certain events so that more swimmers may compete, but these entries will be for "exhibition" and denoted with an "X" in the heat sheet. Times still count for future seeding, but no points may be earned for the team.
6-lane pool (3 entries/swimmers per team to score points):
Relays: 8-4-2-0
Individual Events: 6-4-3-2-1-0
8-lane pool (4 entries/swimmers per team to score points):
Relays: 10-5-3-0
Individual Events: 8-6-5-4-3-2-1-0
Dual meets will have three scores: Girls, Boys, and Combined.
